WELCOME
Welcome to the GIS (Geographic Information System) division of the Rockland County Department of Planning, a multi-functional unit which serves the Planning Department as well as the other County agencies. Although digital data about Rockland County existed prior to 1994, it was not until then that the Planning Department became the lead agency responsible for developing the County’s GIS system.

The GIS system grew out of the digital tax mapping program and was originally developed to help the County’s planners make better land use decisions. However, as the system became more advanced, the GIS system became a multi-faceted tool useful to many other County agencies.

New – Rockland County GIS Portal!!

The Department is pleased to announce its latest endeavor, the release of the Rockland County GIS Portal. It is a gateway to all Rockland County mapping resources.  Using a standard browser, users to the GIS portal have access to: Interactive Mapping Applications, static GIS Maps – our On-line Map Gallery, and the ability to download Digital GIS Data.  In addition, users can use the Map Request Form to order Hard Copy Maps.  See below for more information.

The Interactive Mapping Applications
offers users the opportunity to customize and print their own maps.  Currently there are two mapping applications to choose from: Base and District Map Applications.

The District Mapping Application allows users to enter an address to determine a variety of district information.  Users will be able to determine Town, Village, School, Election, Legislative, Assembly, Congressional, Senate or Census Tract in which they are located.

The Base Mapping Application allows users to interactively view data layers, including parcel information, bus routes, government facilities, parks, points of interest and more.

The On-line Map Gallery allows users to view, download and print a variety of prepared maps which are organized by category.  Users will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the maps.  If you don’t already have Acrobat Reader it is available for free by clicking on the link above.  Maps have been prepared in a variety of sizes ranging from letter to poster size.  If you or your company does not own a large format plotter, you can plot poster-sized maps for a reasonable fee at a commercial establishment such as an office copy center.

Please note that some maps are quite large and may take some time to download even with a broadband connection.

A variety of Digital GIS Data is available for download for use in your own software applications(s).  Most of the data is in ESRI shapefile format or AutoCAD dwg format.  Rockland County does not provide technical support for use of the digital data as it is assumed that users will have the technical expertise to properly use the available data sets.  Users should refer to the associated Metadata for details pertaining to each data layer.  Please note that some files have been “zipped” for faster transfer.  Extracting them requires a file compression utility such as WinZip or PKzip.

Hard Copy Maps may be purchased from the Rockland County Planning Department by using the Map Request Form.  Download and follow the instructions on the form to receive your maps by mail.

Important Note:  This GIS Portal is provided by Rockland County and may be used for informational purposes only.  By using the site or downloading materials from the site, you agree to abide by the terms and conditions set forth in this notice.  If you do not agree to abide by these terms and conditions do not use the site or download materials from the site.  Users to the Rockland GIS portal are permitted to download and print maps, download data and use the interactive mapping applications for personal use only.  Maps downloaded from this site are not to be used for commercial purposes which includes selling of maps or representation of the maps in either their current or altered form.
