Air Quality

Indoor Air    
  • Moisture and biologicals such as molds, mildew and dust mites.
  • Combustion products - unvented space heaters, fireplaces and backdrafting from furnaces and hot water heaters.
  • Formaldehyde – sources include durable press drapes, particleboard products and adhesives.
  • Household products and furnishings –these include volatile organic compounds from paint, solvents, adhesives and fabric additives.
  • Asbestos – most homes more than 20 years old may contain asbestos. Sources include damaged pipe insulation, fireproofing and floor tiles.

  • Particulates – sources include fireplaces, woodstoves, tobacco smoke, dust and pollen.

Outdoor Air   The Bureau of Outdoor Air Pollution ensures the protection of  Public Health through the process of granting permits, performing inspections and complaint investigations.
Article XII of the Rockland County Sanitary Code requires processes to have certificates to operate and prevents emissions from interfering with the comfort of life.
