COUNTY EXECUTIVE ANNOUNCES OPENING OF
NEW DOG RUN IN NEW CITY

New City, NY – County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced today that a new dog run at the Kennedy - Dells  County Park on North Main Street in New City will be open to the public beginning Friday, June 29, 2001.

"Two years ago, we opened the County's first dog run at Kakiat Park in  Suffern and it has been extremely popular. Residents enjoy bringing  their pets to the fenced-in area where dogs are allowed to exercise and interact with other dogs not wearing leashes," said Vanderhoef. "Now we are building upon our initial success with a larger dog run that is more convenient for Clarkstown residents."

The new dog run consists of a grassy area that measures 80 feet by 220 feet and is encircled by a 5-foot high, vinyl-covered, chain link fence.  A double-gated area allows for dogs to be safely unleashed before entering the facility. Once the grass begins to wear, the area will be filled with wood chips.

Director of Environmental Resources, R. Allan Beers said, "County  government is responsive to the needs of our citizens and our dog runs are proof of that. Some residents originally approached us with the idea of creating dog runs, which began in California in the early 1990s and have steadily gained popularity. We hope to create additional dog runs in other  parts of our County, for the convenience of all our  residents."

Dogs are required to wear leashes in County parks, except when they are inside the dog run area. Town parks prohibit dogs altogether.

The Kennedy-Dells dog run can be accessed by following the gravel access road by the soccer fields for about one-quarter of a mile. The dog run will be on your left. The dog run is open the same hours as the park, from sunrise to sunset..
