STURGEON RELEASED
AT
On Wednesday, September 29th 2004 the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s, Hudson River Estuary Program, released 89 hatchery-raised Atlantic Sturgeon into the Hudson River at Haverstraw Bay County Park. “The fish were born of Hudson River parents and have been raised in a PA hatchery as part of an experiment to learn more about Atlantic sturgeon. They are from 4-10 years old and some are as large as 3 feet long. They have outgrown their tanks and are being returned to the river of their ancestors.” Among those in attendance were Governor Pataki, County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef, Mayor Wassmer of Haverstraw, Supervisor Phillips, Commissioner of DEC Erin Crotty, and Cub Scout Pack #36 of Pearl River to assist us in returning the Sturgeon to the Hudson River.
