Fathead Minnows Mosquitoes lay their eggs in moist areas, such as standing water. The eggs become larvae that remain in the water until the adults mature and fly off. Fathead minnows help provide control by eating the mosquito larvae before they emerge into adult mosquitoes. In order to use the minnows effectively, they should be stocked in areas that have a minimum of 8? to 12? of water. It is not necessary to stock streams & rivers as mosquitoes generally do not lay eggs in moving water. If fish are already present in the water body of concern, it is not necessary to add Fathead minnows, as the existing fish population should provide appropriate control. If you have an area that you think would support fish and help control the mosquito population, you can place an order with The Rockland County Mosquito Control Program for some minnows.
