Bike-On-Bus Service

Due to popular demand, the Rockland and Westchester County Departments of Public Transportation are proud to announce the resumption of TAPPAN ZEExpress (TZx) Bike-On-Bus Service starting August 1, 2008.  The TZx connects Rockland and Westchester Counties, providing service to numerous employment, shopping, and recreation destinations along the Tappan Zee Bridge/I-287 corridor.  Because bicycles and pedestrians are not allowed on the Tappan Zee Bridge, this service will be vital connection to the Hudson Valley regional transportation network.

The TZx also connects customers to a variety of other bicycle transportation facilities including:

  • The Old Croton Aqueduct trail (Tarrytown)

  • The Bronx River Pathway (White Plains)

  • New York State Bike Route 9 (Nyack)

  • Suffern, Spring Valley, Tarrytown, and White Plains commuter rail stations.  (Commuter rail bike-on-board policies allow bikes on board many off-peak trains, see next page for details)

TAPPAN ZEExpress Bike-on-Board Policy

  • No special permit or extra charge is required for this service
  • Bicycles are allowed only in the luggage compartment, NOT in the passenger area
    • Newer TZx buses contain a single slide-out bike rack in the luggage compartment area
    • Older TZx and OWL buses have a standard luggage compartment that passengers may store their bikes inside of.
    • Smaller sized buses, do not contain a luggage compartment and therefore will not carry bikes.
  • Bicycle accommodations operate on a “first come, first serve” basis.  (Depending on the configuration of a particular bus, there may be capacity for one or two bicycles)
  • Bicycles may not be carried on the smaller “van” vehicles.
  • Tappan ZEExpress bus service operates from Suffern to White Plains on weekdays and from Spring Valley to Tarrytown on Saturdays.  Schedule, route and fare information is available at www.rocklandbus.com or by calling (845) 364-3333.
  • Neither Rockland County nor Coach USA are responsible for damage or theft of bicycles while in the luggage compartment.

Bicycles are not allowed on current local Transport of Rockland (TOR) buses—However, all future TOR buses will include bike racks and an announcement will be made when bike-on-bus service is ready for the local TOR system.

TZx Bike-On-Board Connections

NJ Transit and MTA Metro-North allow bicycles on board many off peak trains.  Please see their respective website for details and restrictions.
