William L. Darden is affectionately known to his
family, friends and colleagues, as well as the Spring Valley community as
“Bill”.
Mr. Darden attends First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, New York.
He received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Mississippi Valley
University with a Major in Biological and Natural Sciences. While at
Valley State University, at the end of his sophomore year, he was selected
to participate in a research project at Tennessee State University, which
was funded by the National Science Foundation. The former Mississippi
native also earned a Master of Science Degree in Biology from Southern
Methodist University. He graduated with honors from both universities.
Bill is a retired educator from the East Ramapo Central School District in
July of 2000. In his 34 years with East Ramapo, he served as a teacher of
Life Sciences and English as a Second Language (ESL) in Science at Pomona
Middle School. In addition, he also coached baseball at Pomona Middle
School. Bill was a member of the New York State Grant Writing Team and
wrote the curriculum for ESL Science for grades 7-9. He has been selected
three times to Who’s Who Among American Teachers (1992, 2000 and 2002).
In April of 2003 he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award by his
alma mater, Mississippi Valley State University. On October 16, 2003 the
African American Chamber of Commerce of Westchester and Rockland Counties,
Inc. named him 2003 Rockland Political Leader of the Year. In addition,
he has been honored by various civic, Greek (fraternities and sororities)
and not-for-profit organizations for his community involvement.
Currently he is the County Legislator from the Eighth Legislative District
in Rockland County, New York. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the
Rockland County Legislature, 2nd Vice Chair of Planning &
Public Works, 2nd Vice Chair of Budget & Finance, Chair of the
Rules Committee, a member of the Public Safety Committee, and a member of
the Economic Development Committee.
Some of his community and civic involvement includes: member of the
Advisory Board of CEJJES, member of the Education Committee of the Spring
Valley NAACP, member of Alpha Phi Alpa, Alumni Chapter of Eta Chi Lambda
(Rockland Chapter), member of Tappan Zee Lodge No. 79, F. & A.M. (PH), and
a legislative liaison to the Rockland County Human Rights Commission, Vice
Chair of the Rockland County Democratic Committee. He is also a member of
the Rockland County Traffic Safety Board, Buffalo Soldiers Association of
West Point, African American Historical Society, Advisory Board of the
Haitian American Social and Cultural Organization (HASCO), Jamaican
American Civic and Cultural Association of Rockland, Inc. (JAMCCAR)and the
Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund.
Not only is he caring and compassionate, he is a strong advocate for
causes involving the youth and senior citizens in the Rockland community. |
