Columbia University's
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

P.O. Box 1000, Route 9W, Palisades, NY 10964; 845-365-8878

Traces its history back to 1949, when Columbia professor Maurice (Doc) Ewing first set up sensitive earthquake detectors in an old root cellar 15 miles north of Manhattan. Today, the facility Doc Ewing founded is a world-renowned center for research in the earth sciences.
Lamont-Doherty has a staff of 550, including 120 scientists and more than 100 graduate students, but it is no ivory tower. Rather, its scientists are active on every continent and on (and in) every one of the world's oceans, studying earthquakes, volcanoes and climatology, mapping the seafloors, and analyzing the crucial effects of ocean currents on human civilization. menu

New York University School of Social Work
at Dominican College

In carrying out Columbia’s great educational mission, today’s faculty must answer many of the same questions that have always confronted outstanding teachers and scholars. What would we have our students know? What bodies of knowledge, what sets of methodologies, what world views should our graduates take away with their degrees?
As we approach the twenty-first century, the University is committed to preserving the quest for knowledge as more than simply a practical pursuit. Through its broad range of innovative multidisciplinary programs, and through the earnest exploration of difficult questions, Columbia provides students from the United States and around the world with the depth of understanding and intellectual flexibility they need to respond to the challenges we all will face in the years to come.
