a re-created barracks. One million soldiers processed here and

This birthplace and boyhood home of the eminent realist painter
Edward Hopper was built in 1858. Hopper was born here in 1882,
graduated from Nyack HS, died in 1967 and is buried in Nyack's Oak
Hill Cemetary. The restored house is a NYS Historic Site. One of the
rooms is devoted to materials about Hopper's work and life in Nyack.
Three other rooms provide space for monthly exhibits by local
artists. The restored garden is the setting for jazz concerts on
summer evenings. Open Sat/Sun 1-5pm.

The Historical Society of Rockland County owns and operates the
restored 1832 house. An example of Flemish Vernacular architecture
with Greek Revival ornamentation, the house contains period rooms
that illustrate the lifestyles of local farming families during the
first half the nineteenth century. A museum that features an ongoing
series of exhibitions and a barn with outbuildings are also part of
the property. Sundays 1-5pm. |

Exhibits relating to the Battle of Stony Point in 1779. Scene of
Brig. Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne's surprise capture of the
British-held fort. Museum displays relics of the battle, and markers
on the site indicate the location of decisive actions of the battle
which became an important American victory. Also picnicking,
musket/artillery/camplife demonstrations, guided as well as
self-guided tours, panoramic views of Haverstraw Bay and the Hudson
River and a restored 1826 lighthouse - the oldest on the river -
which was restored, re-lighted and re-opened in October 1995. Open
April 15 - Oct. 31. Wednesdays through Saturdays 10-5. Sundays 1-5.
Admission is free, except for special events.
